Spinal health and yoga…

Spinal Health & Yoga

Your spine is more than the structure that holds you upright—it supports nearly every movement you make. Keeping it strong, mobile, and supported can contribute to better posture, flexibility, balance, and overall comfort throughout daily life.

Yoga offers a gentle way to move the spine through different directions while also strengthening the muscles that support it. The goal isn’t to force flexibility or achieve a “perfect” pose. It’s to move with awareness, create space, build strength, and listen to your body.

Some wonderful poses for supporting spinal mobility and strength include:

Cat–Cow — gently moves the spine through flexion and extension and can help ease stiffness.
Child’s Pose — provides a gentle stretch through the back while encouraging relaxation.
Downward-Facing Dog — lengthens the back body while building strength through the shoulders and core.
Low Lunge — opens the hips and front body, which can support more comfortable movement and posture.
Sphinx Pose — gently strengthens the back and opens the chest.
Seated Forward Fold — lengthens the back body and hamstrings when practiced comfortably.
Supine Twist — introduces gentle rotation through the spine and can feel wonderful through the back and hips.
Bridge Pose — strengthens the glutes, back body, and core while gently extending the spine.

A Few Ways to Care for Your Spine

Move regularly. Strengthen your core. Pay attention to your posture without becoming rigid about it. Stay hydrated, rest when your body asks for rest, and remember that every spine—and every yoga practice—is different.

Modify poses when needed, avoid forcing your range of motion, and if something causes pain, back out and choose a variation that works better for your body.

Your spine is your lifeline.
Move with it. Strengthen it. Care for it.

Yoga isn't about creating a “perfect” spine or a perfect body. It's about developing a relationship with your body that allows you to move through life with greater strength, awareness, mobility, and confidence.

Breathe deeply. Move freely. Live fully.
